Experts believe that about a third of breast cancers are in some way related to lifestyle, so even small changes in life can help reduce the risk.

Vitamin for health

When it comes to cancer, certain nutrients can play a very big role. Among them is vitamin C, which according to Swedish researchers is supposed to help protect the breasts. A study at the Karolinska Institute found that higher levels of vitamin C in a woman’s diet before a cancer diagnosis increased her chances of survival. A further analysis of the statistics, however, found that for every 100 mg of vitamin C, the risk of dying from breast cancer was reduced by 23 percent. Excellent natural sources of vitamin C are peppers, blueberries and kiwis, but because even with a balanced diet it is difficult to enter the body in appropriate doses, consider taking supplements.

Try fasting

It is possible that night fasting – at least 13 hours between dinner and breakfast the next day – can protect you from cancer. Researchers at the University of California studied women with breast cancer and found that those who had a longer time interval between the last and first meal had a lower risk of the cancer recurring.

When we fast, the body activates proteins from the sirtuin family, which are known for their anti-cancer effects. The British organization Prevent Breast Cancer also found that during women’s fasting – in this case, they reduced their calorie intake to 500 two days a week – the cells in their breasts divide less often. This is an important piece of information, as tumors form when cell division errors occur.

Reduce alcohol consumption

The less you drink, the lower your risk. Alcohol increases the response to aromatase, an enzyme that converts androgens in your body to estrogen, and many cancer drugs work by disabling this very enzyme. Alcohol also depletes the stores of folic acid, which protects genes in the body. If you can’t give up alcohol, reduce the amount and consider taking folic acid in the form of dietary supplements.

Let the bacteria help you

You probably know that bacteria in the gut help maintain your health, but breasts also have their own microbiome. It can be very important for the health of your breasts to keep this microbiome balanced. A recent Canadian study found that women with breast cancer had more E. coli and Styphylococcus epidermidis bacteria , known for DNA damage, in their breast tissues than healthy women.

In contrast, healthy breasts had higher levels of lactobacillus and streptococcus , both of which act against cancer. Although this does not yet prove a cause and effect, the researchers argue that the question certainly arises as to whether women should take probiotics, especially those with lactobacilli, to reduce their risk. While experts are figuring out how and what, extra kefir in your daily diet will definitely not hurt you.

Watch your weight

Adipose tissue produces hormones and inflammatory compounds that can raise the risk of breast cancer. If you are overweight, you can reduce your risk by 25 to 40 percent by losing 5 percent of your body weight (and maintaining weight at least at this point). Ideally, of course, you are on the lower side of the healthy weight range.

Ensure good digestion

Excess estrogen in the body is associated with an increased risk of breast cancer. The liver purifies estrogen and excretes it in the feces, so there is a possibility that with healthy digestion and regular bowel movements, we can reduce its values. Scientists are still debating this, but a study published in the American Journal of Public Health was able to link a low frequency of bowel movements to a slightly higher risk of breast cancer. Also, studies from the British Royal Infirmiry showed that women with faster digestion had lower levels of estrogen in their blood.

Given that many women suffer from constipation, caring for good and regular digestion is definitely welcome in terms of both well-being and overall health. Try increasing your fiber and vegetable intake, as this usually helps.
